What about NPIs and Superbills?
What’s an NPI or “Identifier”? NPI stands for National Provider Identifier and it’s a 10-digit ID number for providers (that’s you!) that insurers use when processing medical claims. You can get yours here.
Do I have to have an NPI? No, but if your clients want to try and get reimbursement from their insurance for their therapy sessions with you, they’re likely going to need it.
Do I need an NPI Type 1 or 2? If you are a solo practitioner, then you just need a type 1 NPI. The only caveat is if you are a single-member LLC and plan to take Medicare. If that’s the case, then you need a Type 2. Also if you’re starting a group practice then you’ll need a Type 2.
What is a superbill? It’s a receipt for services that your clients can take to their insurance to get reimbursement for their therapy sessions.
Do I have to provide superbills? It is not mandatory! You can decide to not offer superbills. Just make sure your clients know prior to initiating services with you.
How can my clients get their out-of-network benefits? Check out Thrizer, Advekit or Reimbursify!
