Professional Wills for Therapists

It’s not exciting news, but it’s true! Therapists and social workers need professional wills for several important reasons:

  1. Client Continuity and Care: A professional will ensures that in the event of illness, disability, or death, clients still have support and are properly transitioned to another therapist or mental health professional, if needed.

  2. Confidentiality and Privacy: A professional will can include instructions for the handling of client records and information to ensure confidentiality and privacy are maintained even in your absence. This helps protect clients' sensitive personal information and ensures compliance with legal and ethical standards.

  3. Business Continuity: For those of you who run private practices or are self-employed, a professional will can also address the management and continuation of the business aspect of your practice. This may include instructions for notifying clients, managing finances, and transferring ownership or management responsibilities.

  4. Peace of Mind: Having a professional will in place can provide peace of mind, knowing that your clients will be taken care of and your professional obligations will be met. It also alleviates potential stress on family members or colleagues who could otherwise be left to figure out these matters without guidance.
