The Wolf & The Dog
This morning I woke up thinking about The Wolf and the Dog. I thought about a conversation I had with a colleague while I was still full-time at the VA hospital.
In the fable, there is a wolf running hungry and free who meets with a dog who is chained but well-fed. They have an exchange, each making a compelling case for their situation. Ultimately, the moral of the story is that there is nothing worth so much as liberty, emphasizing the invaluable nature of freedom.
In the chat with my colleague, he made a case for the dog, while I couldn't shake the feeling that perhaps the wolf was who I felt more drawn to. Though starving and unsure of his next meal, it seemed like he had the upper hand of being able to go wherever he pleased, whenever he wanted to, doing whatever he wanted. There was a promise of greater possibilities available to him.
I could never reconcile my experience of working for someone else and feeling so confined and dissatisfied. Maybe you feel this way too. What I hope is that you know you have options. And it's ok to make one choice for awhile, and then choose something else. And whatever you're doing right now, I hope you know you can trust it, trust yourself, and trust the timing of your career as it unfolds.
