On Continuing Newsletters (when it gets challenging)

Back in May I wrote about the value of having a newsletter. You can see all the reasons why I recommend it, and some good examples of newsletters here.

The hardest part in starting a newsletter—and the reason people stop, or never even start one—is that it's challenging to keep it going.

I liked this article about the topic, and it inspired me to write my own list of how to keep a newsletter going.

Here are a few tips that have worked so far:

  1. Set a realistic schedule. You don’t have to send a newsletter every week if it feels overwhelming. Start with a realistic frequency; I suggest monthly.

  2. Stay true to your voice. Your subscribers signed up because they connect with your perspective. Don’t feel like you have to be overly professional or try to emulate someone else’s style. Write as if you're speaking to a friend.

  3. Perfect doesn't exist. Some newsletters will resonate more than others, and that’s okay. Consistency is more important than perfection.

  4. Have fun with it. Don't do it unless it's fun! Try and find resources, ideas, etc. that are genuinely interesting and meaningful to you.

I hope these ideas help! Do you want to have a free half hour chat about starting/continuing a newsletter? Let me know. I love this topic and genuinely wish everyone had a newsletter like we do social media.
