Exactly *How* to Start a Newsletter

If I were going to teach you exactly how to start a newsletter, here are the steps I'd encourage you to take:

1. Decide on a niche for your therapy practice, if you haven't already.
2. If you don't have a private practice yet, you can still start a newsletter. Just choose a modality, theory, or human problem that you are passionate about.
3. Put 10 friends, colleagues or family members in your "to" section in your email.
4. Let them know, "hey! I started a newsletter! If you don't want to receive it, just hit reply and let me know".
5. Share 3 things (articles, newsletters, memes, etc.) that you recently read about your chosen niche.
6. Close the email with a sincere expression of gratitude.

Et voilà! You've done it—your first newsletter.

You can stick with this strategy, slowly adding in 10 more people each month. When you hit your six-month mark, I suggest signing up with Mailchimp or Convertkit for a free newsletter plan. Transfer your 60 (or so) contacts there, and continue with the newsletter. Eventually (or immediately, depending on your situation), you can add a Subscribe! button to your website.

I hate to be so bossy with my advice, but again, I really do think you should start a newsletter.
