Video: Regenerative & Joyful Time

It was so great having Becca Rich join us and share her framework for relating to time.

Here are the five key points she shared, a video of the workshop, and a way to donate to Becca’s new mutual aid fund!

5 harmful misunderstandings causing us to use time misaligned with who we are.

  1. Time Scarcity: Shows up as rushing, hurrying, impatience on a micro and/or macro level, impacted nervous systems.

  • “I never have enough time”

  • “Time flies”

  • The opposite = Time is finite, but it is not scarce.

  • Tangibly looks like = prioritizing what’s truly important and staying in integrity with that. Not over-committing.

    2. Internalized Capitalism: Money, work, success are most important.

  • “Time is money”

  • “I need to master or control time”

  • “If I work really hard today, I’ll be able to enjoy life one day”

  • “I have to do everything myself, and look good doing it”

  • The opposite = Time is my one precious life. I can collaborate with time as a whole human being with needs.

  • Tangibly looks like = Figuring out how much is enough, charging accordingly in your practice.

    3. Time Shame: Shrinking, smallness, powerlessness, guilt.

  • “I waste so much time”

  • “I should’ve done something other than what I did”

  • “I’m lazy”

  • “I did nothing today”

  • The opposite = I can feel free and unapologetic with how I want to spend my time.

  • Tangibly looks like = Recognizing you did things because there’s an unconscious need underneath, forgiving yourself for feeling like it was a waste, and doing better next time.

    4. Toxic Productivity: Outsourcing your worth with doing/checking things off the list. The drive to achieve more and outperform self or others. Shows up as guilt, pressure, and discontentment.

  • “I need to get more done”

  • “I can’t take time for me”

  • New year, new me → End of January blues

  • The opposite = I can rest, have fun, and just be when I need it or when I’d like to.

  • Tangibly looks like = Have-done lists that capture it all, and celebrating yourself.

    5. Time Disempowerment: Looking externally for solutions.

  • “I can’t get my sh*t together”

  • “I’ll never figure it (time, goals, success, etc.) out”

  • “I’m missing something. This is supposed to be easy”

  • “I’m so overwhelmed”

  • The opposite = I can find or create my own rules, there is a solution and it comes from me.

  • Tangibly looks like = Let go of the paper planner/morning routine/project mgmt software/etc that doesn’t serve you, and tune in to what might.

Healing these harmful beliefs around time, productivity, rest, and ourselves is an essential part of the process of being able to collaborate/work with time as a regenerative and joyful resource.
