On Worthiness (we’re getting personal)

What do we do when we don't feel worthy?

To be honest, I don't like that question at all. Not feeling worthy is such a painful feeling, I don't want to bring it to your mind. But the reality is, there are times when we feel unworthy.

It definitely comes up in private practice development, presenting as anxiety, especially those first few years. The common *unspoken* question beneath peoples' anxieties is am I worthy of this?

  • Am I worthy of leaving behind a job that no longer fits?

  • Am I worthy of saying no to work I'm not passionate about?

  • Am I worthy of establishing my own schedule and structure?

  • Am I worthy of earning this amount?

  • Am I worthy of this level of independence and freedom?

  • Am I worthy of...more?

The answer to all of these questions is, of course, yes. You are worthy.

But sometimes we have to feel the worthiness in order to step into it. I've had my own experiences around worthiness (or lack of) as a business owner. What I have found is worthiness, as it relates to business ownership, can be developed in the process of building a practice.

In order to feel, and then move into business-related worthiness, I've found these practices helpful:

  • Elizabeth Gilbert's letters from love

  • Tara Brach's RAIN meditation

  • journaling

  • crying

  • talking to people who love and believe in me

  • taking practical action on my business

Just because you struggle with worthiness doesn't mean you shouldn't have, or grow, a practice. Business-related worthiness can be developed, just like any other skill.
